Carolista Music Festival 2003

Residents of the Outer Banks of North Carolina, Marcy and Lou thrive on the peace of that blessed part of the world to feed their music. The waves, sand and wind are just as much a part of their creative process as are the sunshine, humidity and hurricanes. They share a love of family and community that is so important to everyone in their coastal town.

Marcy Brenner is from Virginia and spent time each summer in Nags Head with her family. In the years between, she played (guitar, percussion, mandolin, vocals) in basement party bands, churches, coffee houses, bluegrass gatherings, weddings, special events and several genre and/or original bands in Virginia and then in California. As marketing and artist relation’s manager for Dean Markley Strings in California, she worked “on the other side of the desk” with world-famous artists, which was a valuable and exciting experience for a musician with a
marketing degree. As a songwriter, she had the chance to work with the late producer Nik Venet (Beach Boys, Linda Ronstadt, Bobby Darin) and calls him her greatest artistic mentor. She has “sat in” with many local artists and now spends her time immersed in music and writing and, as a cancer survivor, volunteering for many advocate and support organizations. Her slogan is “live while you’re alive!” and she’s doing just that.

Lou Castro is from Pennsylvania and came to the Outer Banks for vacations, settling in Duck to help in his family’s business. He has studied at the Berkelee School of Music in Boston and played (guitar, bass) in numerous original and top-40 bands. He has played classical/folk guitar at weddings and special events. He has worked in the music business in retail and in repair for Ibanez Guitars as an authorized tech. He teaches guitar at The Music Store in Kill Devil Hills, NC and has “sat in” with many local artists and bands.

A “player’s player,” Lou lists as his major influences the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd, among many others. He has never wavered from his lifelong love of learning, playing and teaching music.

Marcy and Lou hesitate to share how long they’ve been playing music … after all those years they think they certainly should play much better! But they will say that they’ve been playing together as COYOTE since 2001.
